I have found that I have room in my Brain for new music and genres that I’m almost completely unaware of until something comes along and fills it up. This was the case for Florence + the Machine. She kinda just swooped in on me after I heard a nasty Yeasayer (love them) remix of “Dog Days are Over” w/ Gilbere Forte rapping over the top of it. Like I often do with samples in hip-hop songs, I set out to find out who this Florence character was. After downloading Lungs, I promptly fell in love with it. The first thing that struck me as spectacular on the album was the percussion. I am a bit (read: extremely) obsessed with big drums and war drums on records, and this album fell right into that infatuation. The single from the album, “Dog Days Are Over“, is just a wonderfully written song, starting with delicate harp plucks and then swelling with the addition of claps and percussion and other elements, until Florence is screaming something that might take you a few repeats to completely make out. “I’m Not Calling You A Liar” is another standout on the album, using stomps and claps to build upon the angelic harmonies of Florence, until eventually she’s belting the lyrics out and there’s a full drum kit supporting her. “Kiss With A Fist” is a jumping-around-your-room-with-no-shoes-on and hair-whipping type song (catch my drift?). You know, the type of song you’d see in commercial for Blackberry or Smirnoff. Just listen, you’ll get it. “Blinding” is probably my favorite track on the album, and mostly because of how it builds and the percussion patterns. It’s simply a powerful song with excellent production. Enjoy my top tracks from the album and some tasty remixes below.
