Fleet Foxes

I’m not sure I remember the first time I heard Fleet Foxes. I think I’d rather have it that way. I’m sure the look on my face was a unique form of wondrous curiosity. However, I do remember my after thoughts. I recall thinking about their perfect use of reverb and the sad cavernous feelings that the sonic texture evoked. The style storytelling that frontman Robin Pecknold of enlisted was one that is familiar within folk music, however I had not heard it conveyed with such emotion and sincerity. I believed what he was saying, even when I didn’t know what he was telling me. The way that his voice weaved its way in and out of the layers of guitar, horns, and piano seemed to have come from a time long before mp3’s when music was simply a rhythmic and artistic expression of emotions.

Their first album, Fleet Foxes, was the kinda album that left everyone excited for the follow-up. By that I mean it was so outstandingly spectacular that as soon as one had listened to it a good twelve times through, they wanted new and glorious material as soon as they could get it. At least this was the case for me. So given that Helplessness Blues leaked a solid month early, I quickly snatched it up (which for those that follow, is the reason that Bedouin Dress and Battery Kinzie appeard on Brain Salad March, when the album was released May 3).  Certain tracks on the this album sounded like they could have been remastered Simon and Garfunkel b-sides, which if you’re a fan of good music, is a very good thing.  The comparisons come from the lovely harmonies and acoustic guitar work that sound very 1960-something.  Frankly, this album is another collection of fantastic tracks that won’t disappoint.
