under the canopy...
Folk, Indie Rock

The tune-yards are a musical anomaly masterminded by one woman who is titled, Merrill Garbus.  The music she makes is one that creates its own space in the world, and reinvents itself with every new note.  There are certain bands that come along and make their own sound, completely unlike anything else (see Dirty Projectors), and it ends up defining a genre.  Tune-yards is such a band (artist?).  Merrill’s vocals range from a primal wail at times, to a soft falsetto whisper.  Her talents are present in the intricate songs she composes that keep you guessing when the next awesome moment is gonna be.  And trust me, its always soon.  The music is a mix of what I would describe as Lo-fi R&B garage dance experimental jungle music (its okay, that shouldn’t make sense until you’ve heard it).  Highlight from the new album, WHO KILL, include Gangsta, which I’ve played for sooooo many people since first hearing it, Powa, which get the Best build-up-and-drop award for the album, and Bizness, which starts with Merrill looping vocal syllable over one another to create some wonderful noise.  This whole album, and its predecessor, Bird-Brains, both deserve a thorough listen.  Basically this band is one of my favorites of 2011 so far and will most definitely stay that way.

For Fans Of:  Good, interesting music.  Dancing.  Being happy/smiling.  and fun (the activity, not the band).

Gangsta (waiting for this song to be used for a hip-hop instrumental, already suggested it to Hoodie Allen Via FB)
